Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities, known as malocclusion, which means “bad bite.” Orthodontic treatments aim to correct teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Common treatments include:
- Braces: Braces consist of brackets that are bonded to the teeth and wires that are threaded through slots in the brackets. The wires are tightened and work by applying continuous pressure over time to slowly move teeth into alignment. Braces can be made from stainless steel, ceramic, or plastic, and can be removable or fixed. They may also include other devices such as bands and elastics to help move teeth and jaws into desired positions.
- Clear Aligners: Clear aligners are an alternative to traditional braces and are virtually invisible. They are a series of custom-made, mouthguard-like clear plastic aligners that slip over your teeth. Each aligner moves teeth a little bit until they reach their final position. Aligners are removable for eating, brushing, and flossing.
- Retainers: After braces are removed, teeth can shift back to their original position. To prevent this, retainers are worn as directed by an orthodontist. There are several types of retainers; some are removable and others are fixed to the teeth.
